Thomas Campion

Thomas Campion (1567–1620) was an English poet, composer, lutenist, physician, and theorist whose songs represent one of the finest achievements of the Elizabethan and Jacobean lute-song tradition. Born in London, he studied at Peterhouse, Cambridge, and later entered Gray’s Inn, though he did not pursue a legal career. He spent time on the Continent and eventually earned a medical degree from the University of Caen in 1605, thereafter practicing medicine in London. Campion moved easily between literary and musical circles, writing Latin and English poetry as well as music. He also designed and supplied texts and music for court masques, an important form of aristocratic entertainment combining poetry, music, dance, scenery, and spectacle. Unlike many lyric poets whose words were set by others, Campion frequently conceived poetry and music together.

Campion is best known for his four books of Ayres, which contain more than one hundred songs for voice with lute accompaniment. Works such as Never Weather-Beaten Sail, There Is a Garden in Her Face, and I Care Not for These Ladies display his gift for graceful melody, precise verbal rhythm, and an unusually intimate relationship between text and music. His songs range from devotional reflection and melancholy to wit, courtship, and satire. Campion also wrote the theoretical treatise A New Way of Making Fowre Parts in Counterpoint, presenting a practical approach to composition from the bass upward. His dual mastery of poetry and music allowed him to shape words and melody as a unified expressive gesture, making his songs among the most elegant and enduring examples of English Renaissance secular vocal music.
