Giacomo Carissimi

Giacomo Carissimi (1605–1674) was an Italian composer and teacher whose sacred vocal music played a central role in the development of the Baroque oratorio. Born in Marino, near Rome, he held early musical positions at Tivoli and Assisi before becoming maestro di cappella at the Collegio Germanico in Rome in 1629. He remained associated with that Jesuit institution and its church, Sant’Apollinare, for the rest of his life, despite invitations to prestigious posts elsewhere. Carissimi became widely admired as a composer and teacher, and his pupils and followers helped spread his style throughout Europe. Because the Collegio Germanico’s music collection was dispersed after the suppression of the Jesuits in the eighteenth century, many of his compositions survive only in manuscript copies made elsewhere, and a substantial portion of his output appears to have been lost.

Carissimi composed Masses, motets, cantatas, and other vocal works, but his historical importance rests especially on his Latin sacred histories, an important early form of the oratorio. In works such as Jephte, Jonas, and Judicium Salomonis, biblical narratives are presented through solo voices, chorus, and continuo without theatrical staging. Jephte is particularly celebrated for the emotional directness of its concluding lament and chorus. Carissimi developed a supple recitative style capable of carrying narrative swiftly while reserving arias, ensembles, and choruses for heightened dramatic or reflective moments. His handling of text, tonal organization, and vocal characterization helped establish conventions that influenced later Italian and German sacred drama. Through both his compositions and his teaching, Carissimi became a crucial figure in shaping seventeenth-century vocal music and the emerging language of the mature Baroque.
