Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf

Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739–1799) was an Austrian composer and violinist who ranked among the most prolific and successful musicians of the Classical era. Born Carl Ditters in Vienna, he showed exceptional ability on the violin and entered the service of Prince Joseph Friedrich of Saxe-Hildburghausen while still young. He later played in the Vienna court opera orchestra and traveled to Italy with Christoph Willibald Gluck. Ditters subsequently held important musical posts under Bishop Adam Patachich at Grosswardein and Prince-Bishop Philipp Gotthard von Schaffgotsch at Johannisberg. Ennobled in 1773, he adopted the name Ditters von Dittersdorf. A contemporary and acquaintance of Haydn and Mozart, he participated in Vienna’s active chamber-music culture and enjoyed particular success as a composer of operas and symphonies before financial and political difficulties clouded his final years.

Dittersdorf composed symphonies, concertos, chamber music, sacred works, and numerous stage pieces in a fluent Classical style marked by melodic immediacy, wit, and colorful characterization. His best-known orchestral works are the six surviving Symphonies after Ovid's Metamorphoses, which translate episodes from classical mythology into imaginative programmatic music. His comic opera Doktor und Apotheker was one of the most popular German-language operas of the 1780s and for a time rivaled Mozart’s stage works in public favor. Dittersdorf wrote concertos for several instruments, including double bass, viola, and violin, reflecting his practical understanding of instrumental technique. Although his reputation declined sharply after his death, renewed interest has revealed a composer of considerable craftsmanship and invention. His large output offers an important perspective on the rich musical culture surrounding Haydn and Mozart beyond the handful of masters who later came to dominate accounts of the Classical period.
