George Enescu (1881–1955) was a Romanian composer, violinist, pianist, conductor, and teacher whose exceptional range of accomplishments made him one of the most complete musicians of the twentieth century. Born in Liveni, Romania, he showed extraordinary musical gifts in childhood and entered the Vienna Conservatory at seven. He later studied at the Paris Conservatoire, where his teachers included Jules Massenet and Gabriel Fauré. Enescu pursued an international career as a violinist and conductor while maintaining deep ties to Romania, where he became a central figure in national musical life. He divided much of his time between Romania and France and was renowned as a teacher; his pupils included Yehudi Menuhin, who regarded him with exceptional reverence. Political changes after the Second World War led Enescu to spend his final years primarily in Paris.
Enescu’s music fuses rigorous contrapuntal craftsmanship, late-Romantic and French harmonic influences, and deeply assimilated elements of Romanian traditional music. His most familiar works, the two Romanian Rhapsodies, brought him early international fame through their brilliant orchestration and folk-inspired vitality, although they represent only one aspect of a highly sophisticated output. His opera Oedipe, composed over many years, is widely regarded as his masterpiece, combining monumental drama with a highly personal musical language. The Octet for Strings, written while he was still a teenager, displays astonishing structural mastery, while the Third Violin Sonata “in the Romanian Folk Character” recreates the inflections and ornamentation of traditional performance without merely arranging folk tunes. Enescu’s symphonies, chamber works, and sonatas reveal an original composer whose reputation has steadily grown beyond the virtuoso career that once overshadowed his creative achievement.
