Engelbert Humperdinck (1854–1921) was born in Siegburg, Germany, and studied at the Cologne Conservatory and in Munich, where his teachers included Ferdinand Hiller and Josef Rheinberger. Scholarships and prizes enabled him to travel in Italy, where in 1880 he met Richard Wagner. Wagner invited him to Bayreuth to assist with preparations for Parsifal, an experience that left a lasting mark on Humperdinck’s musical language. He later taught in Frankfurt and Berlin and worked as composer, critic, and educator, achieving international fame with an opera originally conceived as a family entertainment.
Humperdinck’s masterpiece, Hänsel und Gretel, premiered in 1893 under Richard Strauss, combines Wagnerian orchestral technique and leitmotivic writing with folk-song simplicity, lyrical warmth, and fairy-tale charm. The opera rapidly entered the international repertory and has remained his most enduring work. His other stage compositions include Königskinder, initially conceived as a melodrama and later revised as an opera, and Dornröschen. Although his music remained rooted in late-Romantic language, Humperdinck’s gift for transparent storytelling and memorable melody gave Hänsel und Gretel a unique and lasting place in operatic literature.
