Isabella Leonarda

Isabella Leonarda (1620–1704) was born in Novara, in northern Italy, into a prominent family and entered the Collegio di Sant’Orsola, an Ursuline convent, at the age of sixteen. She remained there for the rest of her life, eventually holding positions of authority within the community. Although little is known about the details of her musical training, she became one of the most prolific women composers of the seventeenth century. Her convent provided the setting for much of her musical activity, and her works were published in numerous collections over a period of nearly sixty years.

Leonarda composed chiefly sacred vocal music, including motets, psalm settings, masses, and other liturgical works, but she is especially notable for her instrumental collection Sonate da chiesa, Op. 16, published in 1693. Its twelve church sonatas make her one of the earliest women known to have published instrumental sonatas. Her output also includes collections such as Motetti concertati, Op. 7 and Salmi concertati, Op. 19. Her music demonstrates a fluent command of contemporary Italian Baroque style, balancing expressive vocal writing and contrapuntal craft with the emerging idiom of the chamber sonata.
