Marin Marais (1656–1728) was a French composer and one of the greatest performers on the viola da gamba. Born in Paris, he studied the viol with Sainte-Colombe and composition with Jean-Baptiste Lully. In 1679 he was appointed an ordinaire de la chambre du roi for the viol at the court of Louis XIV, a position he retained for decades. He also participated in performances of Lully’s operas and became a central figure in French court music.
Marais’s five books of Pièces de viole form one of the monuments of the viol repertory, combining refined French dance style with exceptional virtuosity and expressive range. Among his best-known pieces are Les Folies d’Espagne, Sonnerie de Sainte-Geneviève du Mont de Paris, and the vividly descriptive Le Tableau de l’Opération de la Taille. He also composed operas, notably Alcyone, whose storm scene became famous for its orchestral effects.
