Alessandro Marcello (1673–1747) was a Venetian nobleman, composer, poet, and amateur musician, and the elder brother of Benedetto Marcello. Born into a prominent patrician family, he pursued diplomatic and governmental duties while cultivating broad artistic and intellectual interests. As a member of the Arcadian Academy he used the name Eterio Stinfalico, under which some of his music was published.
Marcello composed cantatas, sonatas, and concertos in the Venetian Baroque tradition. His enduring reputation rests principally on the Oboe Concerto in D minor, admired by Johann Sebastian Bach, who transcribed it for solo harpsichord as BWV 974. Marcello also published a collection of concertos entitled La Cetra. His music is distinguished by clarity of form, lyrical melodic writing, and elegant contrapuntal craftsmanship.
