Benedetto Marcello

Benedetto Marcello (1686–1739) was a Venetian composer, writer, and magistrate and the younger brother of Alessandro Marcello. Born into a patrician family, he combined public service with an extensive musical and literary career. He held government posts in Venice and later served at Pola and Brescia. Although music was not his official profession, he was highly regarded as a composer and was associated with Venice’s Arcadian literary circles.

Marcello wrote prolifically in sacred and secular vocal music as well as instrumental genres. His most celebrated publication is Estro poetico-armonico, a large collection of settings of Italian paraphrases of the first fifty Psalms. His instrumental works include concertos, keyboard pieces, and sonatas for flute and cello. He was also the author of Il teatro alla moda, a witty and influential satire on the conventions and excesses of contemporary Italian opera.
