Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791–1864), born Jakob Liebmann Meyer Beer near Berlin, was a German-born Jewish composer who became the dominant figure in nineteenth-century French grand opera. Trained initially as a pianist and composer in Germany, he spent important formative years in Italy, where he absorbed the Italian vocal tradition and achieved international success with Il crociato in Egitto. He later centered his career on Paris while also holding important musical appointments in Prussia.
Meyerbeer transformed Parisian grand opera by combining Italian vocal brilliance, German orchestral technique, monumental dramatic structures, and spectacular stagecraft. His principal works include Robert le diable, Les Huguenots, Le prophète, and L’Africaine, the last produced after his death. Hugely successful during his lifetime, his operas strongly influenced nineteenth-century theatre and composers including Wagner, despite Wagner’s later attacks on him. After a long period of neglect, Meyerbeer’s major operas have increasingly returned to the stage.
