Johann Joachim Quantz (1697–1773) was a German flutist, composer, teacher, and theorist born in Oberscheden. After broad early training on several instruments, he specialized increasingly in the transverse flute and travelled widely in Europe, encountering leading musicians and national styles. In Dresden he attracted the attention of the future Frederick the Great of Prussia, whom he taught privately. When Frederick became king, Quantz entered his service in Berlin in 1741 as court composer, flutist, flute maker, and teacher.
Quantz composed hundreds of works for flute, including concertos, sonatas, and chamber music tailored to the instrument’s rapidly developing technique and expressive possibilities. His greatest historical legacy, however, is the treatise Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen (1752), a comprehensive guide not only to flute playing but also to ornamentation, accompaniment, style, taste, and eighteenth-century performance practice. His music and writings make him a central source for understanding the late Baroque and emerging galant style.
