Anton Rubinstein

Anton Rubinstein (1829–1894) was a Russian pianist, composer, conductor, and educator born in Vykhvatinets, in the Russian Empire. A celebrated child pianist, he toured Europe and later built an international reputation as one of the nineteenth century’s greatest keyboard virtuosos. In 1859 he founded the Russian Musical Society, and in 1862 he established the St Petersburg Conservatory, Russia’s first conservatory of its kind. His younger brother Nikolai later founded the Moscow Conservatory.

Rubinstein was an exceptionally prolific composer whose output includes operas, symphonies, concertos, chamber music, songs, and piano works. His best-known compositions include the opera The Demon, Piano Concerto No. 4, and the once-famous Melody in F. Although much of his music later disappeared from the standard repertory, his institutional legacy was immense: the conservatory system he championed transformed professional musical training in Russia and helped shape subsequent generations of Russian musicians.
