Pablo de Sarasate (1844–1908) was a Spanish violinist and composer born in Pamplona. A prodigious performer, he entered the Paris Conservatoire as a child and quickly developed an international career that made him one of the most celebrated violin virtuosos of the nineteenth century. His elegant technique, purity of tone, and apparently effortless command of difficult passagework inspired numerous composers to write for him, including Saint-Saëns, Lalo, Bruch, and Wieniawski.
Sarasate’s own compositions were designed to display the brilliance and lyrical possibilities of the violin, frequently drawing on Spanish dances and popular idioms. His best-known works include Zigeunerweisen, Carmen Fantasy, Introduction and Tarantella, and the four books of Spanish Dances. Their combination of virtuoso display, melodic charm, and distinctive rhythmic color has kept them firmly in the violin repertory.
