John Sheppard (c. 1515–1558) was an English composer of sacred music active during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and the opening months of Elizabeth I’s reign. Little is known of his early life, but he served as informator choristarum at Magdalen College, Oxford, during the 1540s and later became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal. His career unfolded through a period of extraordinary religious change, requiring English church musicians to respond to shifting liturgical practices and languages.
Sheppard’s surviving music includes Latin votive antiphons, Masses, responsories, and English service music. Among his most celebrated works are Media vita, an expansive setting notable for its sonorous six-part writing, and the antiphon Libera nos, salva nos. His music combines richly sustained polyphony with striking harmonic color and expressive breadth, and modern performances have established him as one of the most distinctive English composers of the mid-sixteenth century.
