Franz von Suppé (1819–1895) was an Austrian composer and conductor born in Split, then part of the Austrian Empire. Of Belgian and Dalmatian ancestry, he studied music in Vienna and began a long career in the city’s theatres as composer and Kapellmeister. He wrote incidental music, operas, and especially operettas, becoming one of the principal figures in the development of Viennese operetta alongside Johann Strauss II.
Suppé composed dozens of stage works whose sparkling overtures have remained especially popular. His best-known scores include Poet and Peasant, Light Cavalry, Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna, and the operetta Boccaccio. His music combines Italianate melodic fluency with Viennese rhythmic vitality and brilliant orchestration.
