Tielman Susato

Tielman Susato (c. 1510/15–after 1570) was a Renaissance composer, instrumentalist, music printer, and publisher active principally in Antwerp. Probably born in or near Soest, he appears in Antwerp records as a calligrapher and instrumental musician before establishing a music-printing business in the 1540s. His press became the first important music-printing enterprise in the Low Countries using movable type and issued works by many leading Franco-Flemish composers.

Susato composed chansons, motets, and other vocal works, but he is now especially associated with instrumental dance music. His collection Danserye, published in 1551, contains arrangements of popular dances such as allemandes, rondes, and basse danses. Through both his own music and his publishing activity, Susato played a major role in disseminating the repertory of the sixteenth-century Low Countries.
