Carlo Gesualdo

Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa (c. 1566–1613), was an Italian nobleman and composer whose extraordinary music and turbulent biography have made him one of the most fascinating figures of the late Renaissance. Born into a powerful aristocratic family in southern Italy, he received extensive musical training and was able to pursue composition without dependence on professional employment. In 1590 he notoriously killed his first wife, Maria d’Avalos, and her lover after discovering them together; as a nobleman he escaped prosecution, though the event permanently shaped his historical reputation. His second marriage, to Eleonora d’Este, connected him with the sophisticated musical culture of Ferrara, where he encountered some of the most progressive madrigal composers of the period.

Gesualdo’s six books of madrigals trace an increasingly radical musical language in which extreme chromaticism, abrupt harmonic shifts, dissonance, silence, and violent contrasts are used to illuminate emotionally charged texts. The late Fifth Book of Madrigals and Sixth Book of Madrigals contain his most daring experiments, while sacred works such as the Tenebrae Responsories apply similarly intense expressive means to devotional texts. Although his harmonic procedures remained exceptional rather than founding a continuous school, their expressive audacity has fascinated later musicians and scholars. In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries his work attracted renewed attention from composers, performers, and audiences intrigued by a musical imagination that can sound startlingly modern.
