Guillaume Dufay (c. 1397–1474) was a Franco-Flemish composer whose music stands at the center of the transition from the late medieval world to the early Renaissance. Probably born near Brussels, he was trained as a choirboy at Cambrai Cathedral, one of northern Europe’s leading musical institutions. His career subsequently took him through Italy, where he served the Malatesta family, the papal chapel in Rome, and the court of Savoy, while maintaining close ties with Cambrai. Dufay’s travels placed him in contact with important ecclesiastical courts and with the emerging humanist culture of fifteenth-century Italy. By the time he returned permanently to Cambrai, he enjoyed an international reputation and was consulted on musical and liturgical matters. His long career encompassed profound changes in musical style and helped disseminate the techniques of northern polyphony throughout Europe.
Dufay composed Masses, motets, hymns, chansons, and other sacred and secular works, combining contrapuntal skill with a new emphasis on melodic grace and harmonic clarity. His ceremonial motet Nuper rosarum flores, written for the dedication of Florence Cathedral in 1436, is among the most celebrated works of the fifteenth century. The Missa Se la face ay pale uses a secular chanson melody as the structural basis of an entire Mass, while the Missa L'homme armé helped establish one of the Renaissance’s most enduring compositional traditions. His French chansons, including Adieu ces bons vins de Lannoys, reveal an equally assured command of courtly secular style. Dufay absorbed English, French, and Italian influences into an internationally influential language, and his treatment of consonance, cantus firmus technique, and large-scale musical architecture shaped generations of composers who followed.
